Following successful site visits by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education at two medical schools, the table host will facilitate a discussion related to processes that were instrumental in the success of these site visits. No two accreditation site visits are the same, and our discussion will focus on the climates and cultures at our institutions and how we capitalized on them for success.
Table Host: Colleen Hayden, EdD, University of Missouri - Columbia School of Medicine
This table talk will explore how the Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine at the University of South Alabama’s Continuous Quality Improvement Committee fosters innovation, collaboration, and data-driven decision-making to move beyond satisfying LCME standards. Learn how structured processes and technology tools enhance transparency, inclusivity, and stakeholder engagement for sustained improvements in medical education.
Table Host: Melisa Pierce, MPA, Whiddon COM at U of So Alabama
This table will explore best practices in communication strategies to address student concerns. We’ll discuss how to effectively listen to students, take action on their feedback, and monitor the impact of changes. Participants will learn about successful approaches from various medical schools, lessons learned, and strategies to align institutional efforts with student needs in a changing educational landscape.
Table Host: Pamela Baker, PhD, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine
Staff are often key to running a productive and efficient medical education program. Programs gather copious amounts of data from students, and faculty also have avenues to share feedback. How do schools gather and act upon feedback from staff? This discussion will cover
power dynamics, how to build a sense of community, and how to create an active feedback loop where staff voices are heard.
Table Host: Katie Maietta, MPPM, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine
We will explore assessment processes focused on learning improvement, telling the story of what happens in courses and clinical environments. We will brainstorm ways to collect data, show alignment within the curriculum, and solidify for future improvements at the course and program levels. Guiding question: How do you ensure the Plan-Do- Study-Act cycle of assessment focuses on learning improvement?
Table Host: David Williams, PhD, MPA, Frederick P. Whiddon College of Medicine at the University of South Alabama
Representatives from McGovern Medical School at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and Baylor College of Medicine will share their Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) processes and how they aid in preparing for Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME®) accreditation. Topics will include horizontal and vertical integration of curricula, CQI subcommittees and organization, in-house evaluations and surveys, and data from external sources like the AAMC. We will also ask participants to share their approaches.
Table Host: Samuel Neher, MS, EdD, McGovern Medical School
Where do students find time for self-directed learning? Dental appointments? At the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, students in the Three Rivers curriculum enjoy six flex weeks to complete important tasks. In this discussion, we will discuss the origins and structures of flex weeks, including a review of curated experiences and how students create a week.
Table Host: Greg Null, MA, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine
Explore innovative methods for training and engaging clinical and basic science faculty in meaningful and effective curricula reviews. Also learn how to utilize professional staff support to improve review efficiencies and minimize burden on faculty who are managing competing priorities, while meeting Liaison Committee on Medical Education expectations for course, phase, and curriculum reviews.
Table Host: Raquel Givens, PhD, University of Arizona College of Medicine - Tucson
Medical schools have accreditation-specific leadership roles that are at the frontline of continuous quality improvement; what’s unknown is how these organizational leaders are viewed beyond their technical expertise. Participants will complete a leadership skills inventory and discuss how they are supported and recognized for developing, demonstrating, and sustaining their leadership skills.
Table Host: Sara Kim, PhD, University of Washington School of Medicine
